The wild turkey was almost the national bird… we wouldn’t have been mad about it. Turkey hunting is one of our favorite things to do, and it almost takes over our mind as winter turns into spring (just ask any of our friends who must listen to our constant calls).

“Our soul has escaped as a bird out of the snare of the trapper; The snare is broken and we have escaped.”   -Psalms 124:7

There’s not much better than dawn breaking, an owl hooting, and a big bird gobbling in the distance. So we take advantage of it and use the bird’s natural response to owls and crows against them. In the mornings, we’ve had the most success getting close to roosted birds using a hoot owl call, especially if the roosting site is unknown to you. A little later in the day, a crow call works well for locating a gobbler, allowing you to get close enough to strike him up and call him in.

Once you’ve located the bird, light calling and a whole lot of patience pays off when the big red head pops up in view. The national award winning calls from Higher Calling Custom Calls make this step a little easier.
