Here in the East, much is named after this animal that once roamed freely through our woods: think about Elk River, Elk Creek, and so on. Now, it’s made a dramatic return.

A Southern WV Elk caught on trail cam by Mike Blankenship

“He made my feet like the feet of a deer
and set me secure on the heights.”

-Psalm 18:33

The Elk, among the largest of the deer species, are gaining their footing once again. A combined effort of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, the WV DNR, and natural resource divisions of other states has brought the once native elk back to West Virginia. With a herd that now numbers over 100, this state has huge plans for elk as the population continues to grow and more elk are introduced.

It’s probably impossible to talk about elk around here without the topic of hunting being brought up. Hunting these elk is definitely in WV’s future, but it is no doubt distant. Whether we are able to hunt them in our lifetime or not, we will continue to support their reintroduction and the RMEF as they invest in the state.

We love WV and look forward to the future of this great animal here. Like our state, we also have big plans for elk and we look forward to sharing them with you as our company grows.
